What is the Local Academy Council?
This is a board of 16 people who have governance responsibilities for this school. It is made up of Foundation Governors, parents, staff and members of the local community. The council support and challenge the leadership of the school. Governors are motivated by a commitment to the children, and work to make sure that they get the very best out of their time at Roundhay St John's. The role is voluntary.
What do governors do?
The Local Academy Council's responsibilities are to:
- provide advice and support to the school
- help maintain the school’s Christian values
- help set the school’s vision and aims
- agree school policies
- help the school make good use of resources
- monitor the school’s performance
- provide support and challenge to the Headteacher and the wider senior leadership team in managing and leading the school
The Local Academy Council meet regularly across the school year. Meetings are usually in the evening. Governors are also members of at least one sub-committee. These focus on specific areas of the school’s work including: Teaching and Learning, Pupil Support, Resources, admissions, the Headteacher’s performance management. We also have a strategy group which overviews the work of the council and a SIAMS Committee who specifically evaluate the work of the school as a Church of England school.
Minutes are taken of all meetings and these can be viewed at school.
Some governors are given specific responsibilities such as safeguarding, attendance, equality, and most governors are also linked to a specific class or subject area.
As well as attending meetings each governor aims to visit the school at least once a term. During the visit the governor observes everyday school activities. This helps them to gain an understanding of school life, the strengths of the school and what is done to maintain them as well as the challenges faced by the school.
Governors each meets individually with the chair and vice chair once a year to review their role.

How can I get involved?
Vacancies on the Council governor occur regularly. The school wants the Governing Body to reflect the school community. Governors bring a range of skills and life experiences to the body. No formal qualifications are needed.
The most important qualifications are a wish to make sure that the children get the best out of their time at Roundhay St John’s and some time and energy available to commit to the role.
Governors contribute by gaining an understanding of the school, the challenges it faces and by being willing to ask questions.
Please contact the school if you are interested in joining the Governing Body. We will be very pleased to hear from you.
